Celebrating Rural Life

Richmondshire residents are being invited to ‘have a go’ at a variety of rural activities. The District Council is joining forces with North Yorkshire County Council and Rural ActionmYorkshire (RAY) to ‘celebrate’ rural life on October 2. Craftsmen and women will be on hand to demonstrate everything from spinning and dyeingmwool to making a dry stone wall. There will be information on how to keep animals, grow vegetables and make good compost; the local History Group will be giving out information and there will be performances from a local theatre group. And visitors are all invited to have a go at the various pursuits too! It is the first time this type of event has taken place in Richmondshire and it aims to give people a broader understanding of village life – and how to lead a more self sufficient and sustainable lifestyle, whilst enjoying being part of a rural community. The District Council is working with North Yorkshire County Council’s Stronger Communities Programme, Rural Action Yorkshire (RAY) and Richmondshire Voluntary and Community Action, to celebrate the range of different voluntary and community activities taking place within the area. “We want to showcase the exceptionally hard working volunteers we have locally and hope to encourage all local groups and organisations - from the women’s institute, craft clubs and baking clubs to church, sport and recreation clubs to come together to highlight the amount of community spirited activity taking place in North Richmondshire,” said Kathryn Chapman, Ray’s Rural Community Buildings Development Officer. “We hope it will focus on the kinds of skills that can be built on limited resources, give local groups an opportunity to promote what they do, create an opportunity to build new friendships and is a chance for local residents to become more involved in their community.” The event is free to attend. ‘Celebrating Rural Life’ takes place at Eppleby Village Hall from 1 – 4pm. Admission is free.
